The Testimony That Defines Existence

Few statements are as weighty as the testimony of faith: la ilaha illa Allah, Muhammad Rasool Allah. It is not merely a phrase uttered by the tongue. It is the foundation upon which existence itself rests.

Ibn al Qayyim, in his profound reflections, explained that this declaration is the axis around which the heavens and the earth are established. Creation itself was brought into being for its realisation. Allah sent messengers, revealed scriptures, and legislated divine laws to affirm and protect it. Paradise and Hell were prepared in accordance with it. The scales of justice and the records of deeds were set up because of it. Humanity was divided into believers and disbelievers, righteous and rebellious, based on their response to it.

The testimony is not symbolic. It is decisive. It determines allegiance, direction, and destiny. It establishes the qiblah. It defines worship. It clarifies authority. It is the right of Allah over His servants and the key that opens the gates of Paradise.

Every human being will stand before Allah and be asked two essential questions: What did you worship? And how did you respond to the messengers?

The answer to the first lies in the realisation of la ilaha illa Allah. It requires knowledge of its meaning, affirmation with certainty, and practical implementation. It demands that worship, reliance, fear, hope, and obedience are directed exclusively to Allah without partner.

The answer to the second lies in the realisation of Muhammad Rasool Allah. It requires knowing the Messenger ﷺ, believing in his message, complying with his guidance, and submitting to his Sunnah. It is not enough to acknowledge him historically; one must follow him consciously.

The testimony of faith is therefore not a ritual entry into Islam alone. It is a lifelong covenant. It shapes belief, conduct, loyalty, and accountability. Upon it rests reward and punishment. Through it, life gains purpose. Without it, existence loses direction.

To utter it sincerely is to accept responsibility. To understand it is to anchor one’s heart. To live by it is to fulfil the very reason for which one was created.
